How to Buy a Boat With a USCG Bill of Sale

As a keen boat owner and enthusiast, it is probably fair to assume that you are always on the lookout for potential upgrades to your vessel status. Of course, there are always plenty of different boats for sale at all times, but it goes without saying that not all vessels are equal, both in terms of their quality and in terms of their circumstances of sale. In order to avoid falling into any unforeseen traps and obstacles as part of the process, it is essential that you buy a boat that comes with an official USCG bill of sale attached. With this in mind, here are a few of the key things to look out for and consider when it comes to buying a boat with the all-important presence of a USCG bill of sale.

Get Everything In Writing
Getting every possible detail of your watercraft purchase down on paper is the best way to ensure absolute clarity on the situation. Before you purchase the vessel, it is essential to find out what necessary equipment is included in the sale, and what condition all of the various parts are in. This should all be spelled out clearly in a statement of sale. What this essentially means is that a boat bill of sale needs to be as detailed as possible including measurements, make and model, year of manufacture, and everything else.

Proper Insurance And Registration
You need to make sure you follow all of the applicable laws when it comes to purchasing a vessel. The bill of sale guarantees the legal transference of the boat’s formal title as well as possession from a vendor to the buyer. It acts as proof of the legal deal between the two parties. You need to make sure that you do your homework before buying the vessel, and make sure that every detail on the bill of sale is true and accurate in order to avoid unpleasant surprises later down the line. If you’re not sure what should be on the bill of sale, there are many templates available online.

Make Sure It Isn’t Abandoned Or Stolen
Something that is important to verify through a proper bill of sale of making sure that the vessel you are buying has not been listed as stolen or abandoned. You don’t want to get into a situation where you make a good-faith transaction only to have creditors or authorities knocking on your door to reclaim something that you shouldn’t have bought in the first place. The correct details on a real bill of sale can be a good indicator of authenticity.

If you would like to benefit from finding out much more about the benefits and details of a USCG bill of sale, then don’t hesitate to browse the National Documentation Portal where you will find everything that you could possibly need to know on the subject. Feel free to get in touch with any member of the experienced team and they will be happy to clarify and answer any questions that you might have. We look forward to being able to help.

Benefits of Having and Maintaining a Documented Vessel

Have you been considering documenting your vessel but aren’t sure if it’s right for you? Does it feel as if it could be something that would help your vessel yet you think it might be too much of a hassle? Here at the National Documentation Portal Center, we’ve always believed that the vessel documentation process shouldn’t be challenging at all. In fact, it should be simple, easy, and efficient. That’s what we aim to make it for all of our clients. There are plenty of reasons that vessel owners choose to make their vessel a documented vessel.

Financing to Own the Vessel of Your Dreams
Perhaps the most common reason that vessel owners document their vessels in America is to be eligible for a First Preferred Ship’s Mortgage. Without vessel documentation (or an application for vessel documentation on file) it’s impossible to get this mortgage. As long as your vessel measures at least five net tons and is wholly owned by a citizen of the United States (i.e. you) then you are eligible for vessel documentation.

Use Your Documented Vessel to Make Money How You Want
Some vessel owners can choose to document their vessels. Other vessels, however, must be documented, depending on how the vessel owner plans to use the vessels. Case in point: vessels that are going to be used for transporting people and/or merchandise on the navigable waters of the United States or in what’s called the “Exclusive Economic Zone.” These vessels must be documented and they must be documented with what’s called a “Coastwise” endorsement. Consequently, vessels that are to be used for commercial fishing activities on those same waters must be registered with a “Fishery” endorsement.

An Endorsement to Fit Your Vessel
You don’t have to use your vessel for commercial activities to document it. In fact, the majority of documented vessels have a “Recreational” endorsement. That is what it sounds like: the vessel is endorsed for fun, for having a good time, with family, friends, or even just out on the water yourself. Keep in mind: all vessels can be used recreationally, but vessels with a “Recreational” endorsement can only be used exclusively for recreation. If you ever decide that you want to change your vessel’s endorsement, you can do that at our site, too, through the “Change of Trade Indicator/Endorsement” form.

Research a Vessel Before You Buy With Someone You Trust
You can pick the right endorsement for your vessel when you file for your initial vessel documentation through our site. That said, we offer far more than just a way to get your vessel documented in the first place. Indeed, you can renew your vessel documentation, you can reinstate it (if necessary), you can research a prospective vessel purchase with an Abstract of Title and so much more. All of these forms are available at our site at any time and on essentially any kind of device that you might use, as well. Good luck to you in your journeys.

Documenting a Vessel (Without Losing Your Mind)

Documenting a vessel shouldn’t be difficult. It shouldn’t be the kind of process that takes up hours of your time or keeps you from doing other important tasks. Indeed, that’s why we made our site. When you use our site to document your vessel, you can take a task that used to require hours and get it done in a matter of minutes. Moreover, we make it so that you can do this from practically anywhere. If you look at our website, it’s more than a web address, it’s a promise: it says that you can get vessel documentation from us.

Documenting a Vessel Easier
If you go to our site, you’ll find it in big letters on the left: “Initial Vessel Documentation.” That’s the one you want to click on. That’s how you can start the documentation process easier. Once you click on that, you’ll find that we have all of the most important parts marked with a little asterisk, so that you know what you have to focus on. We understand that some of this might be a bit confusing if this is your first time, so we make sure to include helpful tips at the bottom of some of the more challenging passages. If you’re ever unsure how much further there is to go, you can find follow the status bar at the top. There are only three pages, and then you’re done!

Mobile Optimization
Before the internet, folks were stuck filling these forms out by hand. In the earlier days of online vessel documentation, these sites were really only best accessible through laptops and desktops. We made our site to be fully mobile optimized. That means that it can open easily on any smartphone or mobile device. This kind of freedom makes it easier than ever to fill out your documentation because you don’t have to be tied to a computer to do it.

Your Documentation on Your Schedule
So, you can fill in your documentation whenever you have a moment. Have a long lunch at work? Fill in your documentation. In a long line at the bank? Fill in your documentation. Really, you can take care of your documentation basically anywhere that you have a working internet connection. That means that you can even do it at a car wash, or on your vessel in port. When you have some free time and the internet, you can clear up that pesky documentation for good.

More than the Initial Documentation
Of course, once you fill out that initial documentation, that doesn’t mean that we’re unable to help you. Indeed, throughout the entire process of you owning your boat, we can get you the papers that you need in documenting a vessel. When it comes time to renew your vessel, we’ve got you covered. When you want to change your name or hailing port, we’ve got you there, too. Should you ever sell your vessel, we can assist there as well. When you need us, just call (866) 981-8783.

What You Need To Do About Boat Documentation Renewal

If you have been a registered boat for some time, then the time may be approaching when you need to renew all of the documentation you have submitted to the US Coast Guard. It is important that you remember that a certificate of documentation form for your vessel is only valid for a single year, and after that you may be obliged to renew again if you wish to continue operating a vessel. It is important to remember to complete your boat documentation renewal before the time runs out, as otherwise you may be operating an unregistered vessel, which will cause fine were several hundred dollars to be levied against your boat. If you need assistance with vessel renewal, then we can help you.

Countdown To Renewal

Within a few weeks of your certificate of documentation becoming invalid, you will receive a notification that the registry needs to be updated. You will only get a very short amount of time to renew the vessel, and in fact it is easy to lose your registry status because you submit forms that are not accepted. This is particularly true where you are working with the US Coast Guard, which is suffering some delays in providing documentation. For example, in March 2019 the Coast Guard issued a maritime safety bulletin stating that there were delays in issuing the certificates. This means that you need to be on your toes when the time is nearly up for you to submit your paperwork.

Receiving A Boat Documentation Renewal
You should receive a letter to the post with a notice of renewal around 45 days before your certificate is due to expire. It is tempting to overlook this, particularly because some states are warning about messages appearing from businesses other than the Coast Guard, which may be confusing to some vessel owners. However, it is important that you don’t ignore any notifications from the Coast Guard, because if you do go beyond the anniversary, you will lose your certificate, and you will not only face the hassle of operating your boat without the approval of the Coast Guard, but you will need to go through the whole hassle of re-documenting your vessel again.

Renewing Your Vessel For More Than One Year
If you are able to, we would recommend that you attempt to renewing your vessel for longer than one year. It is possible to renew some commercial boats for up to 5 years, and this will help you to travel comfortably in international waters without having to worry about receiving renewal updates. The cost for renewing your vessel will always be the same, around $26 if you do it directly through the US coast guard, and slightly higher if you use a third party to ensure that your documentation passes the first time. The fee was introduced in 2014, to much opposition, and it is likely that in the future this cost will increase again. It makes sense therefore to try to get your renewal for as long as possible, since the chances of having to pay more for the pleasure of renewing your registry is likely to increase.

Completing The Forms
As with every other form of contact with the US Coast Guard, you can expect to fill in a number of forms to get your renewal accepted. Most people who work with commercial vessels have experience of the USCG paperwork, but still find it difficult to manage. This is because it is often written in bureaucratic jargon, which makes it difficult to navigate through the language in order to understand what the form requires of you. In fact, many ordinary boat owners struggle to manage filling in the forms and sending in the right documentation, and they often find that they have to pay exorbitant fees in order to resubmit the same paperwork again and again.

We Can Help with Coast Guard Vessel Registry

As you work to get your new business off the ground, when you are using ships and boats as part of what you do each day, you will need to follow the protocols and laws set forth by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). Under current regulations, all commercial vessels are required to register with the Coast Guard so they can be documented. Each ship registered receives a Certificate of Documentation (COD) that must be kept on the boat. If all of this is new to you, you may not be sure just where you are supposed to begin, let alone what information you need to supply. Instead of stressing out about the process, you can come to us at Vessel Documentation Online to get the help you need with becoming part of the Coast Guard vessel registry.

The Coast Guard Database

The USCG maintains a database of all commercial ships and any recreational vessels that wish to be documented. This list is kept for commerce reasons and for security reasons. Without a proper COD, it is against the law for you to have your ship in the water as part of your business. If you are stopped by the Coast Guard and cannot produce your registration and COD credentials, you can be cited and receive a hefty fine, have your ship taken out of the water, and perhaps even impounded. All this can have an adverse effect on your reputation and your business.

Becoming Part of the Registry
Becoming part of the Coast Guard vessel registry does not have to be as daunting of a task as it sounds. Instead of you scrambling around trying to find the correct forms to fill out and then mailing it all to the National Vessel Documentation Center for processing, you can turn to us at Vessel Documentation Online for help. Our business is helping owners like yourself get their registration from the Coast Guard without headaches and hassles. You will find the registration forms you need on our website so you can fill them out online. We make it easy for you to upload documents like proof of residency, bill of sale, titles, and more, and you can even submit your payment information to us online. All this is much safer than putting everything in an envelope and mailing it out, hoping it gets to its destination intact.

Your Boat and the Registry
If you need to get your boat or boats listed in the Coast Guard Vessel registry, make sure you come to our website here at Vessel Documentation Online. Our site is simple to use and navigate, and we use the latest technology and encryption methods to make sure your information is protected. You can submit your application to us and have our experts check for errors and omissions that can cause delays.
